Livingston to Missoula

24 april 2019 - Missoula, Montana, Verenigde Staten

Today would be a 50/50 day. We need to get some mileage and wanted to do something. So we checked the map and found Garet Ghost Town near Drummond Montana. Should be a disserted town, about an hour from our next campground. A Good 3.5 hour drive to get there, stretch our legs. Visit the Ghost town and then do the last hour to the winner for having us for the night. The KOA in Missoula. We said goodbye to Mindy by waving at her when we past her window at her office. With al that she had in her she returned to wave. Of we went and this time not North into Yellowstone, but we were heading west again. The first part of the drive was windy and needed a lot of my concentration. But hey, the sun was out again, and we were on the road. The Montana views and landscape are phenomenal, which helped a lot. An hour in, and we were and Suus had spotted a sign along the highway. It said Amsterdam??? Amsterdam??? What the flip? We could never in a million Years let this one go. I hit the brake and for we knew it we were leaving the highway and entered the farmlands of Montana.

Who had thought, Amsterdam Montana? 5 minutes later Suus had a choice to make.... keep heading for Amsterdam, or return to Billings. The sign said it all.

We had to keep heading west, so with a heavy hart we kept going towards Amsterdam. The drive trough the fields were a bit weird, with names as Venhuizen. A village in the Netherlands as well. And somehow I expected a tulip field around the next corner. But no, no tulips. But we did see that other typical Dutch building, the windmill. Here we are 4667 miles / 7511 KM from home. Taking pictures of a windmill in the middle of the small town of Amsterdam, 727 inhabitants. But it was a very nice detour and was along the way we needed to go.

Back on the highway, it was about lunch time. And Suus spotted a sign from Wheat Montana, Bakery & Deli. Well that was just what we needed, 20 minutes and two exisits later. We took a turn, and direct when leaving it you could not miss the place. It turned out to be a fully operational breadbaking factory. And I mean, a real factory. Not set-up for the tourist, but for the local farmers that could deliver their grain and wheats to this place. And they baked bread by the thousands, to be distributed throughout the region. Even the country, I'm not sure. And as a side busines they ran a deli. And what a deli it turned out to be. When you ever get to this place, go and visit. All the truckdrivers know this place, and all the locals come here as well. We enjoyed our lunch, and of course had to take some fresh bakery as well. We took some blueberry muffins, a apple turnover and a cheesecake huckelberry cinamonroll, the size of pizza. You never know when you get hungry again.....which I did....so nothing has been seen since of the cinamonroll.

Of we went to find the ghost town. And what a story that turned out to be........offroad RV-ing, crossing water, and helping stranded people in the snow.....but it will have to wait till tomorrow.
